Which bed base should you choose?
There are three main types of bed base to choose from:
Solid slats
Solid slats are a traditional style of bed base that features a number of bars of timber spaced out across the bed frame to support the mattress. A double bed with solid slats will usually also have a support leg in the middle. The slats are fixed into place with each bar around 3.5 inches in width. They create a strong base for the mattress, with the spacing in-between each slat providing airflow to keep you cool at night.
Sprung slats
The next step up from traditional solid wood slats are sprung slats. These are bars of timber that can act like a spring due to their slightly curved design. When the slat is compressed they are able to absorb the movement, which can make for a softer lying surface at night, and could be preferable for those who do not feel comfortable on firmer beds.
Divan bases
There are two types of divan bases available: spring and platform. Spring bases feature built-in springs that are softer and more cushioned, while platform divans are more solid and offer sturdier, firmer support for the mattress being used on top.
