What Is The Best Fabric For Outdoor Furniture?
Outdoor furniture must be specific when it comes to the fabrics that can be used on the items. After all, outdoor fabrics must be capable of withstanding showers and direct sunlight without it affecting the way it looks. However, it's not all about dealing with those sudden showers that we experience so often in the UK. Instead, the fabrics used with this particular type of upholstery must be capable of withstanding mildew (we have written a guide on how to clean mildew off outdoor cushions just in case) and other nasties that may appear with repeated exposure to the elements. But here is the problem that we have found. People tend to be unaware of what is viewed as being an outdoor fabric. So, that is what we will talk about. Why You Must Choose the Right Fabric for Outdoor Furniture Selecting the right fabric for your outdoor furniture is about a whole lot more than simply finding something that is visually appealing. Instead, you want something that is not only water-resistant, but also both mildew resistant and fade resistant simultaneously. This may sound like a tall order, especially with the UK weather, but we know of various fabrics that are not only water-resistant, but actually water repellent. In short, these fabrics hate the rain and just won't allow that water to penetrate into the actual fabric. But why is this so important? Well, if you want your outdoor cushions to continue to look brand new, then the correct fabric will be essential. However, this is about more than simply dealing with the weather. The Different Outdoor Fabrics So, how about these fabrics? Which ones do we see as working well, and what are potential negatives associated with the different fabrics? In the UK, several options are available. However, a number are more popular than others. The most popular include: Polyester Acrylic fabrics Olefin PVC mesh Marine vinyl Understandably, there are several there you may never have heard of, but let's explain. Polyester Polyester requires little to no introduction. It's used widely and is treated to become water resistant while it is also easy to wipe clean. Do look at a polyester fabric that has also been treated to protect against sunlight, or colours will fade, resulting in your outdoor furniture losing some of its luster. Pros and Cons of Polyester Polyester is very easy to clean. It is heavy-duty, but can be wiped with a damp cloth making it perfect for outdoor furniture cushions. It is also relatively inexpensive, so if you want a bargain for your furniture fabric, then this could very well be the ideal solution. But here's the problem. You cannot simply buy any old polyester fabric. Normal polyester that has not been specifically treated will fade in around a year. Cost This is the least expensive, but also the fabric that tends to offer the greatest variability when it comes to design. However, you need to balance up lower cost with the durability, and that is why we suggest only buying polyester that has been specifically treated. Acrylic Fabrics Acrylic fabrics are also popular, and they are a better option if you live in an area where rain is more of an issue. It's soft, but has an amazing ability to wick away moisture. But that's not its only amazing property. Acrylic fabric is also fantastic at keeping cool in warm weather. It means it's the ideal choice for cushion covers that won't then get too hot. Also, it dries super fast, so those showers will mean your cushions won't be wet for long if they are made from acrylic. Pros and Cons of Acrylic Acrylic performs very well against mildew, so if that's a concern, then this could be the answer. It also copes well with sunlight and UV rays, so as upholstery fabric goes, this is a real contender for the best fabric for outdoor cushions. It's hard-wearing, and can be used on canopies, umbrellas, and other outdoor items aside from furniture. But it comes with its own potential problems. You must make sure the fabric has been protected against stains. If not, then you will find those stains will also become quick-drying, and you then have a problem in removing them. It's also more expensive to buy. However, thanks to the UV resistance, and general durability, it should last for some time. Price As we just said, acrylic covers are more expensive than most. In saying that, they can last for years and still look good. Olefin Olefin is perhaps the least well known of the fabrics we will list here, but it's an excellent choice when it comes to awnings, being stain-resistant, and can be used on all types of outdoor furniture. This fabric is synthetic, and it's made from either polypropylene, or polyethylene. It is a lightweight fabric, and is often lighter than acrylic, but don't think it means it will do a lesser job than acrylic. Olefin is highly durable, is available in a wide range of colours and patterns, and it's also very easy to wipe clean. It may not be able to cope with as wide a range of weather as acrylic, but those showers won't pose any problems. Pros and Cons of Olefin It is extremely resistant to stains, so if you stress about food landing on your outdoor upholstery, then Olefin fabric may be your answer. Also, not only is it water resistant, but it copes well with those UV rays, and it should stay looking fresh and new even after thousands of hours of UV light hitting the fabric. This fabric is also resistant to mildew, so that is often a huge plus for any fabric. But it's not all perfect. It is harder to find, although it's getting easier, and it is heavier than other fabrics. That means while it may work for outdoor cushions, it's not a good idea to use it on umbrellas. Price For price, this fabric is significantly cheaper than acrylic, but it's more expensive than polyester. However, if your budget can stretch to Olefin, then you will certainly get a bargain thanks to its durability. PVC Mesh PVC mesh can be an excellent choice for your outdoor furniture. Not only is it water repellent, but it stands up well against any abrasion, so it won't rip or be damaged without it putting up a fight. This fabric is also capable of standing up well against UV light, so the colours of your outdoor cushions won't just fade the first time you place them outdoors. This material is strong. In fact, it's often viewed as the strongest on the market, so if you feel that you need resilience in your fabric, then this could be the right one for you. Pros and Cons of PVC Mesh The main positive of this material is its durability. It can put up with a lot of abuse before it can rip. This is the toughest of all outdoor fabrics, and it's resistant to both pets and pests. It also won't be attacked by mold, and that saves a lot of hassle in trying to keep things clean. But as with every fabric, it's not perfect. This fabric is not the best when it comes to the planet, and that may very well be something you wish to consider. It can also be quite tough for the companies to work with, so your options may be restricted. Also, it gets hot to the touch. Price For price, PVC is relatively inexpensive, so it's more to the bargain end of the market. Marine Vinyl Marine vinyl is typically manufactured as a combination of both PVC and polyester. Often, the split between the two fabrics is around 75% PVC and 25% polyester. What that means is you have a fabric that is highly waterproof, but also has some of the durability and resilience associated with PVC. This material has been created to cope better with the air and elements found near the coast. This is due to the salt water, so if you live in a coastal area, this fabric could be the best option for you. Pros and Cons of Marine Vinyl The main positive of this material is how it copes with the harsher elements. It is also highly waterproof while durability should not be a problem. It is also capable of lasting for years without looking too bad, and that's due to the heavy-duty nature of the fabric. It can withstand a lot of punishment, and still come out of it looking relatively new. But sweat and even sunscreen can adhere to the vinyl, so it does require some regular maintenance to make sure it looks good. Also, you cannot use bleach to get it clean. Bleach can affect the structure of the vinyl, so you must be specific when cleaning it. Price For price, the marine vinyl is only slightly more expensive than normal vinyl and it's due to the added UV resistance and extra waterproofing. However, it is not the most expensive on the market. And those are the types of fabric used for the sake of upholstery on outdoor furniture in the UK. The industry does have its favourites, but each fabric mentioned above can cope with a fair amount of weather and punishment. The price does vary greatly, but we recommend balancing out price with durability. This concept of durability will change depending on how often you plan on using your outdoor furniture, but you want things to look perfect for as long as possible.
Learn moreHow Do You Clean Outdoor Furniture Fabric?
Caring for your outdoor furniture extends beyond the framework. In fact, that's the easiest part, as cleaning outdoor furniture fabric often proves trickier than you think. However, it only becomes challenging when you are not up to date with the correct cleaning methods to be applied in this instance. Having the incorrect tools and cleaning products will quickly turn an easy task into one that takes significantly longer, and may not lead to the results you were hoping for. So, what is the correct way? Well, that is something we will explore shortly, but to get something spotlessly clean, you need to understand how it could get into such a mess in the first place. Outdoor Fabrics and How They Get Dirty Living in the UK means the weather is not always predictable. So, it makes sense that rain and mildew can become an issue. Add in general dirt and dust, and it doesn't take long for those outdoor fabrics to look past their best. But then, there are other ways in which these outdoor fabrics can get dirty. Bird droppings, food, wine, oil, grass stains from clothing. The list is longer than you think, and then you have muddy paw prints from dogs or cats climbing all over it. You have little chance of your outdoor cushions remaining clean. But that's not designed to put you off having them. Instead, knowing how to clean the fabric will be the best course of action to take. How Often Should You Clean the Fabric? So it's obvious how things get dirty, but how often should you clean the fabric? Well, we must stress that you should not only do this once a season, or once a year would be even worse. The key is in regular cleaning to prevent a build-up of material that is then harder to remove. So, this is what we recommend. If it has been raining, wipe down your patio furniture to remove excess water. While the fabric used on outdoor furniture is water resistant, it can leave rain spots that may form over time. Considering we are looking at a quick wipe with a dry cloth before being left to air dry, then it's not a time-consuming task. But that's not all. Marks and stains should be dealt with as soon as you discover them. This means inspecting your upholstery before and after using your furniture. That allows you to keep on top of matters. In short, dust or lightly wipe the upholstery on a regular basis, but never soak it for reasons we will explain next. Your Equipment From an equipment perspective, you do not require anything elaborate or special. In fact, there's a good chance you will already have everything you need for this job. This is the sort of list of items you should consider using to clean your outdoor furniture. Soft brush Duster Soft cloth Vacuum cleaner with upholstery attachment Two buckets Warm water Washing-up liquid Toothbrush How to Clean Your Outdoor Furniture Fabric We will help you with specific details regarding how to cope with different marks later, but now we look at a basic clean that helps keep things looking pristine. The first step is to give your outdoor furniture cushions a light brush. This is intended to remove dust and dirt that may be sitting on the surface that has had a chance to dry. You may be surprised at how much is on there just by sitting outdoors for some time. But be warned, this light brushing will not be capable of removing hard stains on your upholstery. That will require some additional work, but more on that later as this is more about light soiling. Step 1: Brush and Rinse This first step applies no matter the fabric used on your upholstery. Brush with a soft brush, and then you can rinse your outdoor cushions with your garden hose. You don't need to hit the fabric hard, and you should remove the cushions from the furniture before doing this. Step 2: A Light Wash Get a bucket and mix some washing-up liquid with water, and mix to get a lot of soap suds. After that, get a cloth and wipe over the cushions. You won't have to do too much for most light stains. This mix will be enough to remove the majority of things. Step 3: Rinse and Air Dry The final step with this simple approach is to rinse the soap residue off the cushions, and then allow them to air dry. You can speed up the process by wiping it with a dry cloth to remove as much moisture as possible. That is the basic approach to cleaning your outdoor fabric, but that only applies to general dust and light stains. Things become different when you need to deal with some stubborn stains. Cleaning the Different Types of Fabric But before we talk about those difficult marks, a quick word on the various fabrics that may be used on outdoor furniture. They are all going to be water-repellent to a certain extent. They will all be able to cope with some washing up liquid being applied to them without damaging the fabric. So, don't worry about the fabric as your main focus should be on dealing with the different marks. But here's one thing to consider. Some outdoor furniture fabric can be hand wash, while others can be removed and thrown into your washing machine. Check the label to see which one applies to you. Remember you are dealing with removable covers. Dealing with Different Marks For the cleaning part, the easiest thing is when you simply give the cushion covers or upholstery a wipe over with some warm water and a clean cloth. After that, leave them to air dry, and that should be enough to remove just general dust. However, what about other causes of marks and dirt on your outdoor fabrics? Well, the way you clean them can differ according to whatever the mark may be. Bird Droppings So, you notice a bird has pooped on a cushion, and you want to get it off. This is something you should deal with straight away, as it can leave marks, and it's just not a nice thing to have on there from a hygiene perspective either. For this, you want to begin by determining if the bird poop has dried. If it has, you need to get an old brush and try to brush off as much as possible. This will make the cleaning process easier. Next, use laundry detergent mixed with water, and scrub. Leave it on there for around half an hour before rinsing. You may also want to pressure wash as another option. Wine As we use our outdoor patio furniture for entertaining, it's entirely possible that the odd wine stain can appear on the upholstery. Once again, your cleaning approach needs to be rather specific to make sure it does not leave a mark. In this instance, we are talking more about red wine, as that is the tough one to remove. Here, you need to avoid wiping. Also, use lukewarm water mixed with washing up liquid. A soft bristle brush should then be used. Do check for a potential stain remover that deals with wine stains, but check it can be applied to the fabric. Sunscreen A major concern is sunscreen, and dealing with this is different to other marks. Actually, this method can help with any oil based stains, so keep this in mind. You want to soak up as much of the liquid as possible. A cloth or paper towels will do. After that, apply something such as baking soda or cornstarch to the liquid, and leave it there to work its magic. After 15 minutes or so, you should be able to wipe away the sunscreen from your outdoor pillows, and the stained area should be clean. If not, either repeat the process, and then scrape off the remnants. Mold and Mildew Dealing with those mildew stains is easier than you think, in fact we have written a full guide on how to clean mildew off outdoor cushions. However, you need to determine if you have acrylic or fabric cushions as this changes how you deal with this issue. With mold and mildew, there are two approaches. One is slightly more toxic than the other, but that doesn't translate into being something bad. After all, you will be trying to clean outdoor cushions outdoors. The non-toxic approach is to mix white vinegar with water. Add it to a spray bottle and soak the cushion. The acid in the vinegar works well with the mildew. It's also easier on the skin compared to something such as borax, which is also recommended as a potential cleanser for mildew. However, borax is bad against your skin, so you may want to avoid this. Another option is to take a pressure washer and blast that fabric. This can remove a lot of the mildew, and it's more powerful than trying to use a scrub brush. Key Maintenance Tips Finally, here are some important maintenance tips that should help you keep your outdoor furniture fabrics looking pristine for years to come. 1. Deal with Marks Immediately If you spill something on the fabric, then deal with it as soon as possible. This is important with food and wine stains as you have a better chance of effectively diluting it before it dries into the fabric. 2. Wipe Down Every Time You Use the Furniture Another important maintenance tip is to wipe down the cushions every time you have used them. You won't even have to use dish soap as simply removing loose dirt can help preserve your patio cushions for longer. 3. Check for the Wash Instructions Finally, outdoor living often comes with removable covers, so check the wash instructions. They will tell you if liquid detergent or hot water can be used when cleaning, so follow them closely. Failure to do so can result in damage being done, and we want to avoid that. And that is how you clean the upholstery on your outdoor furniture. Nothing about the process is complex, and as long as you have the correct cleaning solution, along with cleaning tools, then there's no reason why you won't have clean outdoor cushions once again. Our only other tip is to keep on top of this as best you can. Don't wait until the upholstery is looking terrible. Even just wiping things clean on a regular basis can make a huge difference, and it will stop you from having to even potentially replace those cushions simply because you cannot get them as clean as you want.
Learn moreDo Spiders Like Rattan Furniture? How To Keep Them Off
Garden furniture can give a classy and inviting look to your otherwise bare garden. However, outdoor furniture can also become a convenient lounging spot for numerous insects, especially spiders. Although insects are a common outdoor occurrence, they can be a nuisance when they hide in garden furniture. Spiders can end up getting in your clothes and on your body while you’re enjoying the great outdoors. This is particularly concerning since some spiders can be poisonous, and a single bite could land you in the hospital. For this reason, it is always important to look out for spiders and other such small insects that may be hiding in your garden furniture before you use it. Although there’s little you can do to make your entire garden bug-free, there are a few steps you can take to ensure spiders steer clear of your garden furniture. So if you’re looking for ways to keep your outdoor furniture free from pesky spiders, read ahead to find out more. Convenient Methods Of Keeping Spiders Out Of Garden Furniture Spiders can easily hide in garden furniture and get into your clothes while you use them. Outdoor rattan furniture can be prone to spiders, so much so that some people wonder do spiders like rattan furniture more than other types of outdoor furniture? Spiders are found more on rattan furniture as they can hide and weave their webs around the material. Here are a few tips on how you can keep your furniture free from spiders: Clean Furniture Regularly One of the best methods of keeping your furniture insect-free, especially spider-free, is by cleaning it regularly. Simply dusting your furniture every day and wiping it down with a clean damp cloth every once in a while can go a long way in keeping your furniture clean and well maintained and the insects at bay. More thorough damp cleaning can be spaced out by a month. You should remember that some types of furniture, such as some rattan furniture, are not waterproof. Therefore, you must not use too much water while cleaning it. Ensure that you dry your furniture out entirely as well. Use Covers Although garden furniture is meant for all sorts of weather conditions, if you want to improve your furniture’s durability and longevity, it is a good idea to use furniture covers. Furniture covers protect garden furniture from various weather conditions, insects, and small animals. In addition, by covering the furniture, you are likely to keep out most small insects that spiders prey on. With fewer such insects on your furniture, the population of spiders on your furniture will decrease as well. However, it is always good practice to check for hidden insects and spiders when you remove the covers, as some spiders may have gotten under them. Place Furniture In Shade Although garden furniture is often more durable than other types of furniture, it can incur some sun damage if left out in the sun for long periods. It is therefore advisable to keep furniture in the shade. However, ensure there is no moisture where you keep the furniture. This can cause the furniture to grow mould. Damaged and mouldy furniture often attracts more insects which then causes more spiders to collect there. Spider Repellant Sprays There are numerous insect and spider repellant sprays in the market. Some products use natural substances, whereas others use insecticides. If you suffer from a particularly terrible spider infestation, using a high-strength spider repellant spray or insecticide may be useful to get the spider population under control. However, be sure to keep all such insect repellents and insecticides away from the reach of children. You must also be careful of your pets inhaling or licking poisonous substances in insect repellents and insecticides. Such sprays must be used sparingly and followed by regular cleaning and dusting. Essential Oils Spiders are particularly averse to selected scents. These include the smell of peppermint, citrus, cinnamon, basil, mint, and rosemary. Using a few drops of essential oils to wipe your furniture or placing them in a diffuser nearby will not only create a fresh aroma around the seating area but will also ward off unwelcomed spiders. Essential oils are non-toxic, and a few drops can be safely used on furniture. Adding a few drops of it to a bottle of water and spraying it around the area should also do the trick. Diluted Vinegar Another cheap and effective hack for getting rid of spiders is using diluted vinegar. In theory, this works similar to essential oils as spiders hate the smell of vinegar and steer clear from any area that contains it. You can use regular white vinegar or apple cider vinegar. Take equal parts of vinegar and water in a spray bottle and gently spray around the furniture. Be careful not to get too much vinegar on the furniture itself as it can be harmful to it in the long run. Lemon Scented Cleaners As mentioned previously, spiders do not like citrus. You can use this to your advantage by using citrus or lemon-scented products on your furniture. Lemon-scented furniture cleaners are easily available in the market. Using these on your furniture will not only help your furniture stay spot-free and clean, but it will also provide a fruity aroma to the area, along with deterring pesky spiders. Ultrasonic Pest Repeller If you don’t want to use too many products on your furniture but want to stay away from spiders, nonetheless, you can do so by using technology. Modern ultrasonic insect repellents are an excellent solution to your spider problem. Not only do electronic repellents keep insects at bay, but they also do so safely, conveniently, and effectively. They are also a humane way of controlling the spider population without harming insects and preserving the ecosystem. Conclusion Spiders can often be found on garden furniture. Do spiders like rattan furniture, or do they just find convenient hiding spots in them is something we may never know? We know that spiders have a particular affinity for garden furniture, especially rattan furniture. However, using a few hacks and tips and tricks can easily help you curb this issue. Use our tips regularly so that you can keep spiders at bay.
Learn moreRattan Furniture Style History and Trends
The history of rattan furniture is far more involved and intricate than you may imagine. Also, if you thought it may have been something that is relatively new, then you would be wrong. The Origins of Rattan Furniture Rattan furniture can have its origins traced back to Ancient Egypt. We actually have ancient tombs to thank for this, as wicker furniture was discovered buried alongside Egyptian Pharaohs. However, we do not get the name from some ancient source. Instead, the term 'wicker' is actually from languages in Scandinavia. It is believed to come from two words. First, there is 'wika' which translates roughly as 'to bend' alongside the word 'vikker' which translates as 'willow'. Since its origins back in Egypt, wicker furniture saw its popularity move throughout the ancient world, including the Romans and across the civilizations of the Ancient Near East. But while it remained somewhat popular over the centuries, including wicker furniture appearing in America on the Mayflower, it saw a real renaissance in Victorian times. That popularity has never really waned since the 19th century. With the rise of synthetic wicker and rattan in the 2000s, it is now as popular as ever thanks to the option of having wicker furniture outdoors. How it is Made Before delving into how it is made, we need to clarify the difference between wicker and rattan. Wicker refers to the end piece of furniture. Rattan refers to the natural material used to then construct that patio furniture. But the way in which wickerwork armchairs or any other item is made is easy to follow. First, a strong frame, today often made of metal such as aluminium, is used as the base. That gives the item a strong inner core. After that, the natural rattan is woven over the top of the frame to give your modern furniture its finished look. Where it is Made While rattan furniture has clearly been manufactured in various countries around the world, a number of pieces are manufactured in certain Asian countries. These countries include Malaysia, the Philippines, Indonesia, and other parts of southeast Asia. This happens for a reason. These countries have the best climates for rattan, so the items are now effectively made at source before that finished rattan chair or outdoor furniture is then shipped around the world. Famous Names At various times, certain names have been responsible for pushing forward the popularity of rattan furniture. Without them, it's impossible to state where natural rattan furniture would be in the world. A name such as the Wakefield Company is a good example. Named after Cyrus Wakefield, he was responsible for taking wicker products to a whole other level in the United States, and all by accident. In fact, he saw rattan being used as a by-product to stop other products moving around while being shipped, but he didn't plan on throwing the rattan away. Instead, he took it home, wrapped it around a chair, and sold it. The Wakefield Company was born, and it wasn't long until other companies also saw the possibilities. That led to competition between the Wakefield Company, and primarily the Heywood Brothers. Thanks to both companies, wicker furniture was found not only as garden furniture, but also in the living room of homes across early America. Designs & Trends While furniture, and interior decor in general, follows designs and trends, the shape and style of this furniture still follows the same approach, with a few tweaks along the way. Don't think that your outdoor furniture is the same as items that were being designed 100 years ago. Now, wicker furniture takes on more of a modern trend, but with a nod to its traditional days included. However, the trends are more closely related to the different items created using rattan. The Romans were known to closely copy the Egyptians when it came to furniture manufactured from rattan, but things had changed by the 17th century. By then, the main focus was on using wicker for baby furniture, including cribs. This was a new change, but the overall techniques remained the same. After that, the main focus with the design was for items of furniture to be elaborate in style and finishes. Detailing on items had to be intricate. There was a taste for things to be slightly more 'out there' compared to other furniture of the time. Now, a number of pieces of rattan furniture do still contain those intricate details from the Victorian era, but that's not all. Modern styles are slicker and stylish, while often being easier on the eye for some. But behind it all lie the same principles that have always existed. A strong base wrapped in tightly woven rattan to produce a functional and wonderful piece of furniture. Why is Rattan Furniture So Popular Today? So why is rattan furniture continuing to be so popular today? While the rise of synthetic rattan has clearly played a part, it's not the only reason. This furniture is timeless in its appearance. You will instantly recognise it from the moment you set eyes on an item. These items never look tired or old. This can be seen even in recent years, where 2019 was viewed in decor circles as being the year of rattan. But then, 2021 was also viewed as the year of rattan. It's just something that people never fall out of love with, thanks to its versatility, comfort, and practicality. The fact it looks so good is merely a bonus. So that is an extremely brief recap of the history of wicker. It is clearly far more involved than we can cover here, but don't forget you are using a style of furniture that stretched back to Ancient Egyptian times. That alone is impressive, and if you thought it was simply some old basket weaving technique, then think again. Rattan is modern, cool and something that is not going to look out of place in your home.
Learn moreHow To Choose The Best Material For Garden Furniture
Garden furniture comes with so many different options that it can be a tough task to work out which items or material is the best. Things to Consider When Purchasing Patio Furniture So first, let's turn our attention to the main things you need to consider when it comes to purchasing your new patio furniture. For us, there are several important points to consider when searching for garden furniture. 1. The Space Clearly, the outdoor space you have available is key. Do you have the space for a coffee table, corner sofa and some armchairs? Perhaps you only have space for a couple of garden chairs and that's all? No matter the space, there is something there for you when it comes to your garden furniture set. 2. How You Plan on Using Your Patio Area Another key area is on how you plan to use the patio area. Do you just want to relax with you and your family? If so, then a daybed or sofa set could be perfect. However, if you want to entertain guests and have barbecues on those warm summer days, then something set up for alfresco dining is better. 3. How the Furniture Deals with the Weather Do you plan on keeping your furniture outside year round? Knowing if your outdoor seating is weatherproof, or at least how to protect it from the weather, can be important. Having something that is weather-resistant makes such a difference. Keep in mind the British climate and to combat the climate's effects, we've written about the best treatments for wooden garden furniture. Even that wooden garden bench will start to suffer if you don't protect it in the right way. If you plan on using your rattan sofa on a regular basis, then make sure the frame is rust-resistant, and that the rattan is either protected or is synthetic. Understand that the seat cushions will need to be removed from your lounge chair in order to preserve them for longer. 4. How Many People Will Be Using it? Aside from space requirements, knowing how many people will tend to be using the patio furniture is something else to consider. There's no point in purchasing a two seater sofa if more than two people are often present. It's always best to go for more seats or items than you may think you need on a regular basis. After all, you don't want guests to be left out simply because your garden dining set is too small for the numbers. While knowing how many people will use it is not an exact science, there's no doubt you can work out a rough number. We aren't talking about hot tubs or anything like that. But knowing the size of outdoor sofa you need is something everyone needs to do. 5. Maintenance Caring for your outdoor furniture is important if you want it to last for some time. However, knowing how to look after your garden sofa means understanding the maintenance side of things. How you maintain something with the rattan effect is different to acacia wood. Consider how much maintenance you are willing to do. Invest in furniture covers to help protect, and this will also reduce the level of work required to correctly care for your furniture. As long as you keep those few points in mind, then finding the right patio furniture for your needs should be easy. The Different Types of Materials Garden furniture does come in different types of materials, and understanding what each one offers is important when making your decision. From teak, and other types of wood, to rattan garden furniture. From plastic to furniture containing different materials for the upholstery. You may also notice different materials being used on the same dining table or lounge set, and that simply adds to the sheer number of options out there on the market. However, to help you with making your decision, here is a short list of the different materials and why they could be good or bad. Wood Wooden garden furniture has been around for a long time. Teak is a common wood used for outdoor furniture as it contains a natural oil that partly repels water. It does require regular treatment to keep it looking fresh, and an outdoor cover would also be best. Metal Small metal bistro sets are popular, and while they can be rather ornate and decorative, they are prone to rust if not cared for correctly. Rattan Rattan is available in both its natural form and a synthetic version. Built on a metal frame, its versatility knows no bounds. Used on a variety of outdoor furniture, it can be treated to make it more weatherproof, but still requires covering if being left outdoors for a prolonged period of time. Synthetic Material While we have already mentioned synthetic rattan, you may be aware of outdoor sets combining metal frames with material for the seat and back. This can be an inexpensive option, but you must be aware of protecting the items or the weather will work away at weakening the material. Plastic Plastic outdoor furniture will be completely waterproof, so if you do not want to cover things, then this is a viable option. However, you may still want to invest in cushions to make it all that bit more comfortable. While you may come across other rarer materials used in outdoor furniture, those are the most common. Best Garden Furniture Types for Outdoor Dining If you plan on indulging in some outdoor dining, then knowing the best garden furniture type makes sense. After all, when you want to wine and dine, you need the equipment to back up your ideas. When looking at a dining set, then it's obvious as to the items you need, and rattan covers all bases. From a strong and sturdy table to extremely comfortable chairs, it does mean you can sit in comfort while enjoying your food. Dining alfresco means you need to choose if you want a 4 seater, 6 seater or bigger, depending on your needs. The good news is that we do have a multitude of different types of outdoor furniture available for you to check out. Pay attention to the different dining chairs on offer. Do you want them to be stackable for easy storage? Do you need them to be foldable to make life easier thanks to limited space? But there's a bit more to this than simply thinking about the garden table that will work best. We also suggest checking out garden parasols to give yourself, and your guests, some cover. Once again, they come in various shapes and sizes, so be sure to purchase one big enough to cover your dining area. You don't want someone being left out in the sun while everyone else enjoys the shade. Best Garden Furniture Types for Balconies Moving onto balconies, then often space is limited. Yes, you may have space for sun loungers and a parasol, but it's important you don't take up too much of that restricted space. In this instance, a bistro set can be the best option. Not only is it highly functional, but it also takes up limited space. Depending on the size of your balcony, a deck chair could be another viable option. However, if you want something that looks a bit more 'funky' and fun, then egg chairs could be something else you may like to consider. A couple of chairs, along with a side table can be perfect for small spaces. But with balconies, you need to know how to store the furniture. Will you cover it on the balcony? Will you move it inside? That can also determine the furniture you purchase, as foldable or stackable may be required due to those space requirements. Best Garden Furniture Material And finally, how about the best garden furniture material for your outdoor space? Well, we can only come to one conclusion, and that is by saying rattan is undoubtedly the best. Its versatility, durability, and comfort stand out from the rest. Oh, and it is easy to maintain and care for it as well. There is also the fact that rattan never goes out of fashion. It always looks fresh and modern, while it can be used in any garden no matter the rest of your outdoor decor. The aluminium frame contained within the furniture makes it lighter than you expect, but don't make the mistake of thinking light means flimsy. Instead, rattan is a strong and reliable material, no matter if it's used for a table set, a 2 seater, single chair or anything else. Overall, if you want something that is easy to care for, and yet a highly effective piece of garden furniture, then rattan is where you should be focusing your attention. The best garden furniture goes beyond the material it is made from. Functionality and practicality is the key here. Focus on the key points mentioned earlier in the post and think carefully about your needs and requirements. Once you have that sorted in your mind, move on and look at the items available, and perhaps try to focus on rattan compared to other materials. We are sure you will fall in love with the material, its looks, and how it will make such a difference to your outdoor space.

Keeping your cane furniture outdoors requires some specific care if you want your rattan or wicker furniture to withstand the elements. Failure to do so will only result in your cane furniture starting to look past its best by the time the year is over. The problem with this furniture is the sheer number of crevices where mildew and water can set in. However, rest assured that we will guide you through how to correctly care and treat your cane outdoor furniture, so it will last for years to come. But first, a little background. Yes, Cane Furniture Can Be Outdoors It may surprise you to hear that cane furniture, and all other varieties, can be outdoors. This form of furniture has actually been around since the 1660s, and considering it was initially developed in the Netherlands, England and France, the idea of it being outdoors may sound strange. However, thanks to correctly treating and preserving your furniture, the poor weather we can encounter should not be a problem. Why We Need to Treat Cane Furniture Correctly caring for your cane furniture makes sense. After all, you want to prolong its life as long as you can to allow you to continue to enjoy it for years to come. But having cane furniture out there in direct sunlight, along with cold weather and drizzle, will mean the cane will start to effectively decay. You must remember that cane is a natural material, but it will become brittle if not treated. Equipment First, the equipment you will need to correctly treat your outdoor furniture is hardly extensive. However, it's important to have all of these items in place to complete the task at hand. A duster Soft cloth Toothbrush Two buckets Washing-up liquid Bleach (may not be used each time) Boiled linseed oil Varnish This list is not too long, and there's a good chance you will already own most of these items. Before Treating Your Cane Furniture But prior to talking you through how to treat the furniture, you need to do one important step, and that's cleaning the item. This is easy to do, and it shouldn't take you too long if you have been correctly caring for your rattan furniture throughout the year. To clean your cane furniture, begin by brushing, starting off at the top and working your way down. Don't be afraid to take out the toothbrush and get into all those corners and between the weave of the furniture.Use the brush attachment on your vacuum cleaner to get into the corners, but you should find a soft brush and damp cloth is capable of removing most of the dirt and grime. Wipe the furniture with some warm water, and consider mixing in some mild detergent to remove marks and stains. However, make sure you rinse off the suds and allow it to air dry. How to Treat Your Cane Outdoor Furniture So, you have cleaned and prepared your furniture, and it's not ready for the treatment process to begin. To do this, you will require only a few items, and the entire process will not take long to complete. Also, refer back to the list of equipment we mentioned earlier as you will end up using most of the items. Prepping Your Furniture Now, when we talk about prepping your cane furniture, what we mean is getting it ready for treating it. We have already mentioned the need to clean the furniture in advance, so you should have already completed this step before you get to treating it. Now, this applies no matter if you are talking about a single cane chair, or cane seats. The same furniture care tips apply across the board. 1. Double Check for Dirt The first step is to just double check for any missed dirt. Natural wicker woven together creates a number of holes and areas where dirt can sit, and removing it is important as the lacquer you will apply needs to sit right on the cane rather than dirt. 2. Check for Damage The next step is to check for any structural damage to the chair. This is the time to then repair anything that is broken. 3. Remove Old Stains If you have furniture that has previously been stained with varnish, then you need to break through that layer to allow the new treatment to adhere to the furniture. Use some light sandpaper, around 220 grit is fine, and lightly sand. After that, use a brush with a soft bristle to remove the build up. You may need to rinse the furniture down with your garden hose to remove all of that dust and old varnish. If you do, allow it to dry thoroughly. 4. Add the Varnish or Sealant In order to apply the sealant, you should consider turning the furniture up side down and position it to allow you to get to all of the tougher parts of the furniture. Thoroughly stir the sealant and then apply a thin coat in a controlled manner. This approach of turning it upside down may not be for everyone though. It does make sense to do the underside first since the sealant will run through the cracks and into the more visible areas. It then gives you the opportunity to deal with those runs when adding the sealant to the top of the furniture. After that, you are advised to start at the top and work your way down. Do not apply too much sealant to your brush at any given time. That will only increase the chances of it running and causing a mess. Make sure you get into the weave or the weather will find those weak spots. 5. Allow it to Dry The final step is to allow it to dry. Exactly how long this will take depends on the product you are using, but it will take several hours. Make sure the furniture is in a dry spot. After it has dried, inspect it closely to see if you have missed any spots. However, if you painted the furniture in a methodical manner, then this should not be a problem. Ongoing Care and Maintenance Tips Treating your outdoor furniture is easy, but it does require some ongoing care to keep things looking perfect. Cleaning is an essential part of maintenance. Clean wicker is not going to break or develop mildew if you keep on top of dirt and dust. We aren't saying you need to wash with soapy water every week, but dusting and brushing the furniture weekly is important. Another tip is to consider using boiled linseed oil to help with continuing to care for your cane furniture. You can buy boiled linseed oil at a DIY store, and applying it even once a year can make a huge difference to how your wicker furniture will survive through the winter. But that's not the only thing to consider when it comes to winter. After Treating Once everything is done, the best advice we can give is to buy furniture covers that will protect your furniture set from the elements when not in use. Not only will it protect the natural fibers used in the construction of the furniture, but it will increase the lifespan of the furniture as well. Outdoor wicker furniture, and we include natural rattan in this as well, does not cope well with being exposed to poor weather for an extended period of time. Patio furniture is delicate and needs cared for correctly. Even synthetic rattan garden furniture requires protection, so do invest in an adequate cover if you want to continue enjoying your furniture for years. And that is how you treat cane outdoor furniture. This is certainly something you need to do with outdoor furniture, as the weather conditions will take their toll if not careful. A failure to do so will only lead to your furniture starting to look worse for ware, when it was entirely avoidable.

Nothing brings an outdoor patio or backyard to life like some classy metal furniture. It beautifies any space and gives you a place where you can meet with guests, enjoy drinks and food on the barbeque (or even just hot wings), and make memories that will last forever! Garden furniture is an excellent addition to any outdoor space but can be pricey. Metal garden furniture, in particular, is quite expensive. No one wants to invest this much money, only for it to rust away after a few years of exposure to the elements! Exposure to dust, snow, rain and the tides of time are conditions that can translate to rust in outdoor metal patio furniture, leading to their rapid decline and lack of usability. But does it mean you should give up and opt for plastic outdoor furniture? No, you shouldn't be forced into such a situation. There are ways you can protect your metal garden furniture to last for many seasons and save you lots of money on replacements. If you have metal garden furniture that is looking worn and in need of some TLC, then it is time to learn how to protect metal garden furniture! How Do I Stop My Patio Furniture from Rusting? Pre-emptive Measures Getting some wrought iron, stainless steel, or other types of outdoor metal furniture requires a substantial investment. The best way to protect this investment is to prevent rust in the first place. The following tips give you a few pre-emptive measures to stop rust in the first place: Keeping Your Metal Garden Furniture Dry at All Times To some, keeping your metal furniture dry at all times sounds like a tall order. To others, it sounds like an outright futile exercise. Sure, wrought iron, bronze and steel make pieces of furniture that are more resilient than wood or wicker. But, repeated exposure to water and traces of moisture damage your metal furniture over time. Exposure to even tiny water droplets facilitates the rapid oxidation of the metal or what we commonly call rust. The most straightforward fix to this issue is wiping off any water with a soft, dry, and absorbent towel or piece of cloth. This helps prevent rust and also maintains the glimmer of the paint job or fine finish for longer. Using Outdoor Furniture Covers Even though you have taken care to keep your garden furniture dry, this does not mean that it is completely protected from corrosion or rusting. It needs an additional layer of protection to ensure that damage does not occur by ensuring that water does not find its way onto the furniture’s surface. Protecting your metal garden furniture involves using protective covers, like patio covers, tarpaulin cover-alls or even rubberised dining table pads. The plastic will protect your metal furniture by acting as a layer of protection between the elements and the metal. But, this is not the most elegant solution for most people, so we look at other alternatives. Keeping Your Outdoor Furniture Sheltered Most (if not all) of us hate it when we get caught in the rain. It messes up your clothes, and you get the sniffles for a while. Well, the rain hits your metal backyard furniture and upholstery even harder. Water is, after all, the primary catalyst of rust. Building a gazebo or a cover deck protects your metal furniture from exposure to heat, rain and wind. You can also spring for an affordable heavy-duty garden & outdoor tarpaulin on Amazon if you're a tenant. With that in place, you can enjoy rust-free garden furniture for longer. And if you're wondering if you can put garden furniture on grass - we've got that covered. Keeping Your Metal Garden Furniture in Storage Let's be frank. You won't need to use your garden furniture all year round, even if you live in a warm region. Your work schedule may not allow you to invite your workmates or neighbours for a barbeque every day. And the winter conditions are not that conducive to outdoor activities. So, the most responsible thing to do is to keep your patio chairs and tables in storage when it's not in use. There, it'll remain safe, and you can pull it out when the need arises. You probably have some garage and other ideal storage spaces, so it's merely a matter of picking what works best. Aside from that, you can cover your precious metal outdoor furniture with a tarp to reduce instances of mould and mildew bloom or dirt accumulation. Furniture Care and Maintenance Measures One of the best ways to keep your outdoor metal furniture rust-free is regular care and maintenance. Sure, you could hire a pro. But, why waste all that money when DIY methods can suffice. Here are some of the easiest ways to clean all the corrosion out of your metal garden furniture: Pressure Washing Metal Garden Furniture Running a garden hose through your garden furniture may work like a charm. But, the problem is it doesn't get into all the cracks and crevices. You're also left with loads of wiping to do after a hose-down. But that’s not the case when you use a pressure washer. Such a tool cuts away at the grime hiding in the crevices. It also uses less water, so you can leave your metal furniture out to dry after a quick wash. Pressure washers come in all shapes, sizes and price points on Amazon. So you can spring for one without breaking your piggy bank. A Sponge Bath with Some Dish Soap Dish soap can be a formidable ally against all the agents of corrosion and rust working against your furniture. It comes with mild alkali compounds that cut at rust. And, the formulation also has oils that provide an invisible protective coating that can shield metals from rust while keeping them smelling fresh. A White Vinegar and Water Cleanse White vinegar is one of the best detergents to use when you notice traces of rust on metal objects. As a mild alkali solution, it has active compounds that eliminate tough stains and stubborn mildew. You can use a 1 part white vinegar and 2 part water mixture, and a fine wire brush for grime. But, if the stains or rust are too stubborn, then you can add more vinegar. You'll also need a harder scouring tool like a ball of steel wool or fine-grit sandpaper to rub all the grime and traces of rust off the affected metal surfaces. Rust Prevention Measures Not everyone has the time or patience to clean or maintain their metal garden furniture. You may also be short on storage space. But, that doesn’t mean your patio furniture has no hope for redemption: The following tips can also help to keep your furniture rust-free for long periods: Rust Prevention with Paste Wax A coat of paste wax provides a water-resistant layer that keeps rust at bay. Best of all, a little wax paste can go a long way. You can use the following procedure to keep your metal garden furniture reasonably rust-free: Caution: Paste wax has varied effects on different paints and materials. So, it may be prudent to test it out on hidden surfaces to avoid any undesired results. Wipe all traces of dust with a dry cloth You can use a piece of fine-grit sandpaper or a wire brush if your lawn chair or other furniture is caked in grime. Give the furniture a once-over with a damp cloth to remove any stubborn residual dirt or grime. Let it dry Apply the paste wax with a large flat paintbrush and a smaller one to get into the crannies Once you’re done, allow the furniture to dry for some time before using it Grease Sealant for Rust Protection Grease is thick enough to use as an anti-rust sealant. You can apply a thin layer of grease to keep your lawn chair, umbrella, table or other pieces of metal outdoor furniture rust-resistant. It's also a robust lubricant. Therefore, it's the best rust protection agent for joints and other articulating (moveable) parts of your furniture. And you can wipe it off with water, dish soap and a soft cloth if it starts dripping all over your lawn or paved surface. Tip: Grease is a messy affair. So, don’t apply the grease on bits of the furniture that may come into contact with a person or their clothing items. Try a Multi-Use Rust Prevention Spray Grease, paste wax and other household sealants offer an easy DIY route to rust prevention. But, the application process can be messy and tedious. That's where Multi-use sealant sprays come in handy. These sprays have a quick-drying formulation. They dry within minutes and leave a durable, thin and water-resistant rust-proof layer. So, you won't have to wait for too long before using your lawn furniture. WD-40 Flexible Straw System comes highly recommended for this purpose and is readily available on Amazon. This product features a bendable straw for greater precision in covering those dug-in crevices. WD-40 silicone lubricant spray is ideal for wrought iron, stainless steel, cast iron, and chrome. This spray-on sealant locks in all the lustre with an active rust and corrosion protection layer. With such a rust prevention spray in place, you have the confidence to get more metal garden furniture and ornaments without the worry of rust. What Else Can You Do To Keep Your Metal Outdoor Furniture Rust-Free? Constant exposure to the sun, rain, bird droppings and other corrosive elements will encourage rust. Sadly, these effects ring home after years of furniture use. Sometimes even the most dynamic of rust prevention sealants and spring cleaning initiatives don’t work. So, what options do you have in such a case? Well, you can take some of your free time to give your patio furniture a touch-up paint job. A spray paint helps you dispense with the problem in a matter of hours. After a couple of years, your factory coated or painted metal furniture loses its appeal. So, the most prudent step to take is to include your lawn furniture in your home improvement drive, where you scrape off all the paint and give it a touch up with a new rust repellent layer. To Wrap It Up Getting some beautiful metal garden furniture is a worthy investment. However, it comes with some burden of care. But, as you can see from our tips –it's not that hard if you have the dedication and energy. These sure-fire rust prevention tips will make the task at hand easier. With some luck, you can even turn your furniture into heirloom pieces that your kin will get to enjoy someday as they frolic in the sun.

Keeping your cane furniture in tip-top condition is relatively straightforward, but only when you know what you are doing. Unfortunately, people tend to use the wrong products or approach with their wicker furniture, and that will only spell disaster. However, the reality is that cleaning rattan furniture can be easy, as the following tips and advice will prove. What is Cane Furniture? What you are looking at with cane conservatory furniture is a mesh of split canes added to a framework. The intention here is to weave the cane to create a strong, sturdy cover capable of putting up with a lot of punishment. Different materials may be used to create the furniture. It can then be used to create not only a single seater chair, but couches, tables, and various other items of furniture. The History of Cane Furniture Cane furniture was actually first conceived in the 1660s, so it has been around longer than people realise. Its origins lie in an area covering the Netherlands, France and the UK, and since then it has grown in popularity, as well as spreading around the world. From that time, it has remained highly popular. The Types of Cane Furniture Just immediately prior to us taking you through how to correctly clean your cane or wicker furniture, we should point out that different types of cane furniture exist. This is primarily due to the material used in its creation. That is why you will discover rattan garden furniture along with cane, or wicker. However, no matter the material, the actual cleaning and caring process remains the same. How to Clean Your Cane Conservarory Furniture To correctly clean your cane conservatory furniture, it involves you moving through several steps. However, don't worry, as we will guide you through each step. Do note that we are talking about the actual furniture, and not the upholstery. The upholstery requires its own approach. How Often Do You Need to Clean Your Furniture? So how often should you be cleaning your furniture? Generally, doing a regular clean will help prolong the life of your furniture. This applies no matter the material it is constructed from. However, when we talk about cleaning it on a regular basis, we are not talking about the constant need to do an in-depth clean. Instead, preventing a build up of dirt, dust and grime makes sense. As you will see, tasks are broken up into weekly, monthly, and yearly to make life easier for you. Equipment You Will Need to Clean Cane Furniture So, how about equipment? Well, chances are you already have the majority of items you will need to correctly clean your furniture, and if you don't have any yet, we've talked about the best conservatory furniture previously. For most people, this is what we recommend. A soft duster A soft brush Several soft cloths Toothbrush At least two clean buckets Bleach Warm water Washing-up liquid Vacuum cleaner complete with upholstery brush attachment Linseed oil (optional) As you can see, it's not a long list, but each item on the list will prove useful for cleaning your rattan furniture, or whichever version you have in your conservatory. Tasks and Best Method for Cleaning You have your list, but how do you clean, and how often should you clean? The truth is that certain tasks should be done weekly, while others are done more sparingly. Let's go through them. Dusting - Weekly You should dust your cane or wicker furniture at least once a week. You may also wish to use the brush attachment on your vacuum, and make sure you get into the weave of the cane, as that is where the dust and dirt will sit. The key here is to do this weekly to prevent build up. It also reduces the chances of dirt and grime setting into place, as that would only make the cleaning harder. If you find some stubborn marks, take out the toothbrush, and with dusting, make sure you get into all the corners and joints. Cleaning Stains - Weekly Check your furniture for any stains and try to remove them. For this, a soft cloth with warm water mixed with some washing up liquid will suffice. However, a word of warning. Do not scrub a stain, especially if it is still fresh. That will only push whatever has created the stain deeper into the furniture, and that makes it harder to remove it. Instead, wipe with little pressure, and then leave the stain to air dry. Those two steps should be on your weekly list, but then you need to think about a deeper clean on a monthly basis. A Monthly Clean To correctly do the monthly clean, you need to make the correct solution to allow you to effectively wash the furniture. Note, we are not talking about soaking the furniture, that would do more harm than good. Take one of your clean buckets, and make a solution consisting of four cups of warm water blended with a tablespoon of washing up liquid. Stir, and keep doing so until you see some of those soap suds appearing on top. With this, you want to also get your second bucket at the ready, and fill this with just normal warm water. This will act as a way to rinse your cloths and to be able to effectively wipe down the furniture when done. Take your damp cloth, and start from the top of the piece of furniture working your way down. This applies no matter if you are dealing with cane chairs, tables, natural rattan, wicker, or anything else. Keep on rinsing out the cloth in the second bucket, and only ever make it damp rather than soaked. You may have a lot of suds on your clean cloth, but soaking these natural materials with too much water will only encourage the development of mildew. As like before, if there are more stubborn stains, then dip the toothbrush into the soapy water, and use a bit of elbow grease to dislodge the dirt and grime. However, you still cannot use excess water. Finally, make sure the soap is off your rattan conservatory furniture. Use a clean cloth to dry it, and then allow it to air dry. Caring on a Yearly Basis Finally, there are several tasks to complete on a yearly basis. This is the time where you inspect your outdoor furniture for any damage. It's also the perfect time to check for mold or mildew. This can rest even on synthetic rattan, so if that is what you own, you are not immune from mold. If you have mold, mix equal parts of bleach and water, but make sure you wear gloves and googles for splashes. Apply the mix, but don't scrub. Then, move it into direct sunlight to help the furniture to dry as quickly as possible. The final step is to get that linseed oil, and dip a soft cloth into the solution. You will then need to apply the linseed oil starting at the top, and wiping downwards. You can buy boiled linseed oil in your local DIY store, and make sure you remove those furniture cushions before you do this. After the oil is applied, allow it to dry for at least 48 hours. The Do's and Don'ts Finally, a few tips on things you should do with your cane or rattan furniture, along with some things we strongly recommend you never do. 1. Use Good Quality Linseed Oil The linseed oil helps protect the furniture, so only apply a good quality oil that will actually help the furniture, rather than mark it. 2. Make Sure You Don't Soak Your Furniture Rattan furniture means it is made from a natural material. Soaking it can lead to twisting and breaking, leading to your furniture becoming useless. Only ever dampen the furniture. 3. Always air dry You must always air dry, but this shouldn't take long due to not soaking the furniture. Don't be tempted to apply heat. Heat will potentially damage the material. And that is how you can successfully clean your cane conservatory furniture, and keep it looking pristine for years to come. There's no doubt that correctly caring for your furniture will help prolong its lifespan, and you can see that it's quite straightforward and easy to do. However, please do just pay attention to the products you use. The cane can become quite fragile in nature, and you do not want to do anything that will

Classic outdoor wooden furniture has always been a great way to add character to your backyard. Anyone with a little bit of knowledge about wooden furniture will tell you that teak is the best type of wood to use for outdoor furniture. Not only does teak furniture look great with its elegant tawny-gold natural colour, but it also has a long life if cared for properly. Teak is a robust hardwood that is durable and hardy. Its high density prevents teak furniture from bending or warping with time and under strain. What’s more, it is also resistant to rot. It is more impermeable than other types of wood thanks to its natural oils, making it an excellent choice for garden furniture. Teak requires minimal care, but if maintained properly, it can last for years to come. In fact, over time, teak ages to produce a characteristic silvery colour that looks stunning and rustic in furniture. However, like all wooden furniture, teak requires regular maintenance that increases the furniture’s longevity. After all, outdoor furniture has to bear all sorts of weather and insects, so owners need to know how to protect and treat teak garden furniture. Want to know what is the best way to protect teak garden furniture? Look no further because we’ve brought you all the best tips from the market! Cleaning Your Teak Furniture Cleaning your teak furniture from time to time will help maintain its colour and lustre. Generally, regular dusting and wiping should suffice for day-to-day cleaning. However, occasional thorough cleaning is advised as well. Before applying any protective agents to your furniture, a thorough cleaning should be done, and the furniture must be dried completely. The following are some common products and techniques you can use to clean your teak outdoor furniture: 1. MILD DISH SOAP AND WATER Although teak furniture is generally impervious, cleaning up spills and external stains is still important. This can easily be done by scrubbing the furniture with mild soapy water and a soft brush. It is always recommended to scrub with the grain and not against it when cleaning teak furniture. 2. TEAK CLEANER Teak cleaners can also be used for removing stains. These are especially great at removing the silver patina teak wood tends to develop over time. Most stains will be removed by scrubbing with mild soap or with a teak cleaner. 3. DEGREASING AGENT Grease stains can be tough to clear out. If scrubbing does not remove the grease stain, a degreasing agent can be used sparingly to remove it. These are easily available at hardware stores and supermarkets. 4. SANDING TEAK Some individuals also prefer to occasionally sand their teak wood. This is especially great for aged teak that has discoloured and developed a silver patina. Light sanding with sandpaper of fine grit will help remove any silver discolourations and reveal a fresh, vibrant surface underneath. Restoring the old furniture to its glory days. But remember to sand lightly as you could end up damaging the furniture and leaving the surface rough if you are too aggressive with the sandpaper, especially if it is coarse. If the furniture's surface is rough, it will easily attract more dirt and stain. Products To Protect Teak Furniture Since teak produces its own natural oils, it is resistant to water, most stains, and dry rot. If outdoor teakwood furniture is well-maintained, it can remain in great shape for numerous years. That being said, a few protective measures will ensure longevity for your teak outdoor furniture. The best part is that protecting outdoor teak furniture is neither very time-consuming nor costly. So, how do you protect teak outdoor furniture? There’s no rocket science behind this. All it takes is the occasional good cleaning and a few simple products. Teak Protector Teak protector is a safe, water-based, non-flammable solution free of solvents, Volatile Organic Compounds (VOC), and harmful ingredients that hasten the deterioration process of outdoor teak furniture. Unlike most teak sealants, varnishes, and oils, teak protector is also environmentally safe. Thanks to its water-based formulation, the product is easy to apply and gives a non-greasy even finish. In addition, this solution helps protect outdoor teak furniture from harmful Ultraviolet rays so that the wood ages slower and maintains its original honey-brown shade for longer. How to Apply Teak Protector Follow the steps mentioned below to successfully apply teak protector to your outdoor teak furniture Ensure your furniture is completely dry. If you have washed your furniture, allow it to dry in the sun for two weeks. Apply an even layer of teak protector with a piece of lint-free cloth Allow the solution to penetrate the teak for 4 hours Apply a second coat of teak protector solution and leave the furniture for 24 hours before taking it outdoors again Teak Sealant A teak sealant is usually used to maintain the elegant tawny-gold colour of fresh teak. It also offers protection against Ultraviolet light, mould, and even moisture. All of which helps the teak wood maintain its integrity and robustness as it ages. Sealants for teak have a thin water-like consistency and are solvent-based. They can be easily applied to furniture in coats that should be refreshed every 6 months or annually. It must be remembered, though, that at whatever colour you apply the sealant on, depending on how aged it is, that is the colour that will be maintained. When applied to fresh teak wood, its honey-brown colour will last for an extended period. If you use it on the silver patina, that is the colour that will be preserved. If your outdoor teak furniture has developed a silver shade that you are not too fond of, you can gently sand it away to reveal the light brown coloured wood underneath. This, however, must be done before the teak sealant is applied. You can buy teak sealants from hardware stores and marine stores where they are normally kept for boats. How to Apply Teak Sealant Teak sealants are generally easy to apply because of their water-like viscosity. The following steps detail how you can apply teak sealants to your furniture. You can also watch this video to get an idea of how to apply the sealant. Thoroughly wash the outdoor teak furniture with water and mild dish soap. Use a brush with soft bristles to gently scrub off the dirt, going in the direction of the grain with every stroke. Dry the furniture in the sun for about 2 weeks to ensure no moisture remains in the wood and open up its grain. Lightly sand off any stubborn discolourations that you want to get rid of from the furniture. Spray the furniture with the sealant all over and rub the liquid in with a lint-free cloth, or use a brush to spread it out evenly. Clear Teak Coat If you want to add an extra layer of protection to your outdoor teak furniture, we recommend using a clear coat on top as well. Not only will this give your furniture a lustrous appearance, but it will also add an extra layer of protection against the elements and prevent the teak outdoor furniture from deteriorating prematurely. However, before applying the clear coat on top of the sealant, ensure that the sealant has had enough time to cure and set completely. Always apply the clear coat after teak sealant, never before. How to Apply Clear Coat The following steps can be used to apply a clear coat to your outdoor teak furniture: Sand the top surface of the furniture lightly Apply an even single layer of clear coat all over the furniture Wait for the first layer to dry Apply a second even coat of clear coat Teak Oil or Teak Sealant? You may hear many people recommending the use of teak oil to add sheen or prevent the wood from fading. However, teak oil does neither of those things. Instead, it may harm your outdoor teakwood furniture by promoting the growth of mildew. It will also add a greasy surface texture and could potentially attract greasy stains as well. Since teak wood naturally produces specific oils, adding other oils to its surface is unnecessary. On the other hand, sealants have protective properties that help slow down the deterioration of the wood and maintain its colour. If your objective is to improve your outdoor teak furniture’s colour and remove stains with teak oil, a better alternative is to clean the furniture thoroughly and lightly sand it instead. This can be followed by the annual sealant and clear coat application to maintain the teal’s natural golden brown hue. Maintenance Tips for Teak Outdoor Furniture Now that you know more about the qualities of teak and how to protect outdoor teak furniture, here are a few maintenance tips that will go a long way in keeping your teak furniture in great shape. 1.
